Common Water Heater Questions From Calgary Homeowners
How much does hot water tank replacement cost in Calgary?
A standard 40-gallon gas tank typically costs about $1,950 to $2,200 installed in Calgary, and a 50-gallon about $2,100 to $2,400. Power-vented tanks cost more, and tankless units run about $4,000 to $6,500. Prices include removing the old tank. These are typical market prices.
How long does a hot water tank last in Calgary?
Most gas hot water tanks in Calgary last about 8 to 12 years. Calgary’s hard water builds up sediment, which shortens tank life. Flushing the tank yearly and checking the anode rod can help it last longer. If yours is over 10 years old and rusting or leaking, plan a replacement.
Can you replace my hot water tank the same day?
Often, yes. Standard 40- and 50-gallon gas tanks can usually be replaced the same day you call, depending on availability. If your tank is leaking, shut off the cold water valve above it and call (403) 312-9099. Tankless units usually take a day or two to schedule.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Calgary?
Yes. Replacing a gas water heater in Calgary requires a City of Calgary gas permit, and the work must be done by a licensed gas fitter. We pull the permit as part of every installation. Permitted work stays on record with the City, which matters when you sell.
Is a tankless water heater worth it in Calgary?
A tankless water heater gives endless hot water and lasts longer, but costs more upfront and needs yearly descaling in Calgary’s hard water. It suits larger households or homes that run out of hot water. A tank remains the lower-cost choice for most homes.
What size hot water tank do I need?
As a guide, 40 gallons suits one to two people, 50 gallons suits three to four, and larger households may need 60 to 75 gallons or a tankless unit. We size it to how many showers, baths and appliances run at once.
